GPS Travel Guides
Here are some things to look for when buying a GPS.
Auto-routing – This is a feature that will automatically give you turn by turn instructions. Almost all car GPS units have this feature. However if you are going to buy, make sure it contains the words auto routing or auto-routing on the features description. You may want to verify if it has spoken instructions or only shows you on the screen. If you are going to hike in the mountains this feature is unnecessary since there are no streets. Sometimes GPS that have auto routing do not work well off road. For instance some TomTom units will show you where you are off road, but will state “unusable location” if you try to save your location to find it later.
Real time traffic reports and weather reports- The high end models often offer this however there is usually an annual fee which must be paid.
Size - Smaller units are easily transportable and can be removed and kept in your pocket if you are worried that your car will be broken into. The larger units have a nicer display and can actually contain a small hard drive that can hold maps to the whole country.
Maps – Don't forget to verify that the GPS unit contains the geographic locations you are going to drive in. Also check if the maps include streets. Auto routing GPS will always contain the streets, but other hand-helds that don't have auto-routing may or may not include the streets.
Accessories – Does it include a car charger? Does it use batteries? Does it have an additional antenna? A case? Down loadable updates?
